Physical therapy helps patients whose mobility has been impaired by illness, injury, or the aging process. The therapist’s goals will be to help the patient regain as much mobility as possible and to reduce pain.
Depending on what the patient needs, physical therapy can include ultrasound, whirlpool sessions, massage, paraffin, TENS, and hot packs.
What Is TENS?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, and it describes the use of electricity to treat pain. Common conditions treated with TENS include tendinitis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, and cancer.
The therapist will place electrodes on the treatment site. The weak electrical currents will prevent the pain receptors from sending signals to the brain.
What Is Whirlpool Therapy?
Whirlpool therapy can improve a patient’s mobility and reduce pain and swelling. The patient will put the affected body part in a special tub of water. In some cases, they may immerse their whole body. The therapist will have them exercise in the water to improve their range of motion.
What Else Can Physical Therapy Include?
Physical therapy will include exercise, which has multiple benefits. First off, it helps the patient relearn how to use the affected body part. It also strengthens it, so the patient is less susceptible to re-injury. Exercise also helps keep the patient’s weight under control so they will be less vulnerable to conditions like heart disease or diabetes.
