Tips for Practice Safety With Candles

One of the best ways to make your home feel cozy and warm is by lighting a scented candle. If you’d like to create a nice ambiance, scents like vanilla, citrus or cinnamon can be extremely delightful to enjoy. When you’re ready to use your beloved candle, it’s important to take a few things into consideration surrounding safety.

1. Honor the burn time.
In most cases, candles have a burn time at the bottom of the jar. It’s a safety precaution. You shouldn’t burn a candle for more than the three or four hours at a time. When the soot gets released, it can be harmful to inhale. If you like to burn candles while you get work done, make sure you monitor the number of hours that pass. You can burn it for a few hours in the morning or a few hours in the afternoon. Don’t do both times.

2. Don’t leave the candle unattended.
You should never leave a candle unattended. Even if you’re trying to create an ambiance for a romantic night with your spouse, be mindful of all the candles you light. The last thing you want is to ruin a night by needing the home fire escape ladder and the firefighters to save your family and home. If you know you’ll be in a specific room for a certain time, it’s okay to light the candle. Otherwise, you can always purchase battery-operated candles that won’t set the house on fire. Make sure your children understand the importance of fire safety as well. You don’t want them to light a candle and fall asleep before blowing it out.

As you work on practicing these safety habits, remember that accidents happen. Prepare an escape plan by purchasing a home fire escape ladder. To learn more about how to get one of your own, turn to a company like First Alert, Inc.
